Caledonian orogeny was formed when the sea bottom pressed up in gigantic chunks that turned upside down, like books in a bookcase. They were thrust all over the landscape in what is known as overthrust. The chunks were called nappe and could be pushed hundreds of kilometres to the east. They slid over primitive rocks, layer over layer, occasionally with alum shale as lubricant. An example is the steep Cihkkumbakti near to the west shore of Gaska Gaidumjavris.
