The Ähpar massif is in western Sarek, established as a national park in 1909. The photo is taken towards central Sarek and shows the glaciers Ruopsokjiegna and Ähparjiegna. The amount of snow that falls during the winter and how much of it does not melt away during the summer determines whether or not a glacier grows or shrinks. At these altitudes in Sarek, most precipitation falls as snow. The yearly precipitation is among the highest in the country, approximately 2,000 mm, or about 20 meters of snow.
