The area is called Sandåslandet for its many sand ridges created by the inland ice. They run through the landscape and can offer easy-to-hike trails. Also south of Råstojarure lies Sweden?s most fertile palsa region. Palsas are mounds of peat on marshes where permafrost is prevalent and frost as such near leaves the ground. They can be several metres high, but are sensitive to changes in the average yearly temperature and act therefore as indicators of how the permafrost is affected when the climate becomes warmer.
